Rock, soul, and more

No Static

No Static, led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Scott Stone, is an energetic SF Bay area band that plays a grooving and unique selection of rock and soul music.

The band is:

Scott Stone – lead vocals, keys, & guitar

A talented multi-instrumentalist and versatile singer, Scott has written, performed, and produced three solo albums that span several different genres and styles. His last solo record, N.Y.C., Bodily, was a concept album and ode to the Big Apple, where he lived and attended school before returning to his native California.

An old soul, Scott’s favorite styles of music include Motown, Philly soul, psychedelia, and all kinds of jazz.

Alan Oehler – guitar & vocals

Alan is a fluent, fluid and versatile guitarist. He was born and raised in New York, and as a teen, he first heard Eric Clapton with Cream, and that was it. While in college he started playing in bands. He moved to the West Coast not long after, and played in a band or two in San Francisco before deciding it was time to “get serious” about life and get a real job. He stopped performing but continued to learn and grow, playing with friends and experimenting with home recording.

He returned to performing in the early aughts, occasionally as a solo guitarist or in guitar duets, as a sole accompanist to jazz singers, with a some small jazz combos, and in local cover bands including SNUG and Tehya.

His influences include Cream, the Allman Brothers Band, Weather Report, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the Beatles, burritos, XTC, the Neville Brothers, King Crimson, the Police, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Jaco Pastorius, pizza, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Sting, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Pat Martino, Joe Pass, Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, pastina, James Brown, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, pot stickers, Robben Ford, Derek Trucks, Mike Stern, Ollie Halsall, Allan Holdsworth, Chick Corea, Wayne Krantz, John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Kurt Rosenwinkel, ice cream, Richard Bona, Gretchen Parlato, Björk, Kate Bush, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thelonious Monk, Frank Zappa, chicken tikka masala, Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Stravinsky, George Crumb…

Tom Josa – bass & vocals

Tom Josa-bass & vocals

“So many great songs, so little time!” Tom comes from a family of musicians, and in his early years he learned to play wind instruments like the oboe and baritone sax, all while teaching himself guitar. His real passion is music with a beat, which led him to learn the bass.

Apparently, he never got the “don’t quit your day job” memo, so Tom left behind a long and successful career to pursue this and other interests. Since 2007, he has played in local bands such as the The Distractions and Jimmy Hit the Wall, Full On, Tehya, Above the Law, Sin Dokumentos and the Hummers. Tom is keen to learn and play a variety of music, appreciating that “there is hardly a genre that doesn’t produce some great music once you get it.” Rock, funk, pop, Latin, indie, country, even disco and smooth jazz are all in his wheelhouse. Early influences include Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Santana, The Eagles, The Rippingtons and Sade, but his all-time favorite band is Steely Dan. Watching people having a good time dancing is what keeps him going.

Dennis O’Keefe – drums

Dennis is a Bay Area native, a multi-instrumentalist that has played in various groups since the early ’90s. Starting out as a classically-trained pianist at a young age, he picked up drums later on in high school to fill a missing spot in a band with friends. It stuck and became his instrument of choice for live performances. His influences behind the kit include David Garibaldi, Danny Carey, Carter Beauford, Steve Gadd and a host of jazz masters. He enjoys jazz piano and music theory in his down time, and occasionally takes on piano students.

Scott and Alan are also available to perform as a duo. Check out an example recording on the Music page.
